Speaker: Business Solutions
to Rural Poverty: Notes from the field on the promise & perils
in making markets work for Africa’s poor farmers
Antony Bugg-Levine, Country Director, TechnoServe-Kenya
Against a backdrop of increased media attention
about African poverty, and a growing awareness that traditional
approaches of donor aid have failed, Antony Bugg-Levine, the Country
Director of TechnoServe-Kenya, will describe how entrepreneurs in
Africa are positively transforming rural communities. Drawing from
examples of TechnoServe’s current work in Africa –setting
up milk cooling plants, reviving Africa’s cashew processing
industry and incorporating smallhold farmers into efficient supply
chains to urban markets—Mr. Bugg-Levine will describe what
it takes to make market forces work for poor people (and why most
“development aid” does little long-term good). He will
also outline the critical need and varied avenues for people with
private sector experience and training to participate in the eradication
of poverty. |
