Faculty
Yale SOM’s expansive definition of management has its foundation
in the broad interests of our world class faculty. A few examples
of their work follow.
Operations: Prof. Edward Kaplan
Edward Kaplan has spent more than fifteen years developing methods for
evaluating policies to manage the AIDS epidemic and to prevent the spread
of HIV. He is the author of more than 100 articles and 3 books in this
area. Recently, Dr. Kaplan has used his insights and experience to address
questions of smallpox vaccination, addressing another major issue of
our day.
Dr. Kaplan’s work in this area is wide-ranging, addressing issues
of protecting the blood supply, HIV incidence estimation, resource allocation,
and other aspects of AIDS policy. His work has spread far beyond OR/MS
into journal articles throughout the public health policy field. He
has served on the Institute of Medicine’s Committee on HIV Prevention
Strategies and has had an editorial role in a large number of journals
related to AIDS and public policy. From the Institute for Operations

Finance: Profs. Will Goetzman, Barry Nalebuff,
and Matthew Spiegel
Professors Nalebuff and Goetzman have been instrumental in creating
an important new tool aimed at revitalizing neighborhoods. Home Equity
Protection (HEP) is an innovative product that makes it safer for people
to invest in a home. It guarantees homeowners that if the housing market
declines in the area where they live, they will be protected for part
or all of that loss. By providing this protection, HEP also helps to
attract and retain homeowners in neighborhoods where there is a concern
that property values might go down.
HEP was made available in Syracuse on July 30, 2002, through Home Headquarters,
Inc., a NeighborWorks® organization, in partnership with the Syracuse
Neighborhood Initiative, the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation,
the Yale School of Management, Freddie Mac, Real Liquidity, LLC, HSBC,
the Mortgage Risk Assessment Corporation, and a number of local partners.
It has already demonstrated its appeal to homeowners with nearly 60
customers and $4 million of home value protected in its first year of
operation. HEP has also received substantial attention in the local
and national media, with coverage on NPR's "Marketplace" in
Forbes magazine, and in The Economist.
Public Management: Prof. Douglas W. Rae
Professor Rae’s recent, widely acclaimed book, City: Urbanism
and Its End (Yale University Press) is the latest product of his distinguished
career in public management. He is a specialist in the political economy
of cities, electoral politics, political ideology, and power relations.
A member of the Yale faculty since 1967, he took leave in 1990 and 1991
to serve as chief administrative officer of the City of New Haven. He
is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former
Guggenheim Fellow. Professor Rae has been a consultant for the Parliament
of Spain, the Italian Christian Democratic Party, and the BBC. He has
served as president of Leeway, Inc., a nonprofit corporation serving
AIDS patients. Professor Rae is consulted frequently by the media for
his views on urban development, reversing urban poverty, and regionalization.
