Programs
The Program on Social Enterprise at the Yale School of Management (PSE) supports scholars, students, and alumni interested in the connections between society and business. PSE facilitates work on nonprofit and public organizations as well as initiatives in the area of corporate social responsibility. PSE’s activities span courses, research, student and alumni activities, and publications. In addition to the formal activities described here, the PSE also serves as a focal point for social enterprise-related activities at SOM, facilitating, advising, and drawing connections among students, faculty, the Yale community, and the greater network of nonprofit organizations and interested institutions.

Courses
New Sector Alliance. PSE facilitates a relationship with New Sector Alliance to run a workshop on nonprofit consulting. Working with mentors from leading consulting firms and under the supervision of faculty advisors, Sharon Oster and Stan Garstka, student teams complete a consulting engagement for a local nonprofit. Students have worked with Brody Weiser Burns and Mercado Global.
Independent Study: Development Finance and Sustainable Energy. In fall 2007, PSE will facilitate an independent study in which students will prepare a resource that aids in the development of collaboration between development finance and renewable energy professionals. The independent study will be supervised by Garry Brewer and will focus on content developed for the Development Finance and Sustianble Energy Conference.

Extracurricular Programs
Each year, PSE collaborates with SOM Student Clubs to produce conferences and other events. Examples include:
Yale Education Leadership Conference. PSE works closely with students and alumni to organize a conference to discuss leadership in K-12 education. The February 2007 inaugural conference addressed issues on both the national and local levels, ending with a panel on “Closing the Achievement Gap in the State of Connecticut.” Featured speakers included Wendy Kopp, President and Founder of Teach for America; Dacia Toll, YLS'99 , President of Achievement First and Founder of Amistad Charter School; Andrew Fleischman, Connecticut State Representative and Chairman of the Connecticut General Assembly Education Committee; and Steven Adamowski, Superintendent of Hartford Public Schools. Global Social Venture Competition (GSVC). SOM is a partner in the Global Social Venture Competition with the Haas School of Business, Columbia Business School, London Business School, and the Indian School of Business. GSVC is a business plan competition for MBA students and recent graduates who are starting new social ventures around the world. Yale engages students, faculty, and alumni to judge and mentor business plan teams in preparpation for the Global Finals, hosted at Haas. The grand prize is $25,000. Read more »
The Philanthropy Conference. This annual conference, cosponsored with the Net Impact Club, brings to SOM speakers from the world of philanthropic giving. The keynote address was given by Mary Ellen Iskenderian, SOM ’86, President and CEO of Women’s World Banking. Other distinguished speakers included Paul Connolly, SOM ’91, Senior Vice President, TCC Group; Yee-Ann Cho, SOM ’99, Senior Program Manager, Education, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation; and Claire Gaudiani, Professor, The George H. Heyman, Jr. Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising, New York University.

Professional Programs
PSE collaborates with alumni who are professionals in relevant fields to organize programs geared for professionals. Examples include:
AAM-Yale Executive Education Program for Museum Directors. PSE worked with the American Association of Museums to organize a four-day seminar for museum leaders. The program featured presentations by SOM faculty and seasoned museum professionals. Read more »
Stewards of Change Child Welfare Conference. Since 2005 , PSE has hosted this invitation-only event with Stewards of Change. The conference targets leaders in the field of child welfare, including scholars, managers of government social service agencies, philanthropic institutions, and business leaders. Read more »
Development Finance and Sustainable Energy Conference. PSE is working with the Development Finance Forum to organize a conference that will gather practicing thought leaders in the fields of development finance, sustainable energy, and energy finance. In addition to practitioners in these fields, a select group of academics, donors, policy makers, foundations, and students will be invited to join the discussion of how these fields can work together to expand access to and use of sustainable energy products and services by low-income people around the world. PSE co-sponsors and administers the Program on Nonprofit Organizations with the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale. Read more »
PONPO Seminar Series. Each year, PONPO hosts seminars that bring together Yale-based researchers, distinguished scholars from around the globe, and seasoned practitioners in the field. The seminars encourage the cross-disciplinary discussion of topics related to nongovernmental organizations in the developing world.
.John G. Simon - PONPO Award for Research on Nonprofit Organizations. To commemorate PONPO’s 30th anniversary in 2008, we will award a grant of $5,000 to a Yale graduate student for research with the potential for outstanding contribution to the study of nonprofit organizations in developing countries.

The Leadership in Healthcare MBA for Executives brings together distinguished faculty from Yale’s Schools of Medicine, Public Health, and Management to teach a curriculum that integrates the analytical and leadership skills of the Yale MBA with an in-depth exploration of the human, economic, political, and technological issues that make healthcare a uniquely challenging managerial environment. Each year, the Samuel A. Forman, MD, MBA / Class of 1995 Scholarship funds one candidate from a public or nonprofit employer, for whom the MBA-E program fees would otherwise be prohibitive. Past Programs
Partnership on Nonprofit Ventures. In 2005, PSE wrapped up the National Business Plan Competition for Nonprofit Organizations, co-sponsored by the Goldman Sachs Foundation and the Pew Charitable Trusts. The Competition awarded $1.5 million in prizes to 24 nonprofit ventures and over $2 million worth of technical assistance to 60 semi-finalist groups from 2003 to 2005. Through an associated course, “Workshop on Entrepreneurship in the Nonprofit Sector,” 116 SOM students worked with nonprofit managers and professional consultants, and got hands-on experience in developing business plans for nonprofit ventures.
